Lunch With Doug: A Re-Entry Into the Heart of Our Community Since March 23, 2017
Where it began and where it will end are left to the unknown.
Lunch With Doug has been on an official viral internet outbreak since March 23, 2017, but the roots are planted much deeper.
Doug Harper began making videos of his band and their adventures in 1996 and later building on that by promoting a then non-existent local music scene in his hometown of Nevada, Missouri.
By 1998 using an internet journal, internet web log or homepage as sites like his were called back then (before the term blog was coined in the spring of 1999) he unknowingly started one of the earliest music scene websites in the nation.
The Local Ear Underground Entertainment Guide began simply because no mainstream coverage of local music was happening. The live music boom of the 60's, 70's and early 80's had since crashed regionally and something new was on the horizon.
A printed fan-zine was created but with the power of the internet it became obvious that to get to the masses it was going to take more technology and less paper.
Although the printed Local Ear fan-zine was reasonably successful for a short while it was a hard reality that people were mostly reading via the on-line email newsletters. Two hundred subscribers quickly peaked at around 5,000 before the end of that era, and the birth of the famous social media site Myspace, then later crushed by a massive Facebook presence.
The tools that were out there were crushed by the new competition and the consumers moved to new trends. Local Ear went back to the underground, but the local music scene had arrived at mainstream.
Doug went on to have several really good years as a successful musician as well as many others involved with the local music scene.
So was it mission complete? Well not exactly. The live music scene grew too big for town and the musicians involved started to move to larger music scenes of all sizes such as Nashville, Los Angels, New York, Denver, Kansas City, Columbia, and Springfield.
Doug found himself even moving to Nashville for a short while before realizing that his heart was being an indie, and his love was to do big things in a small town. Knowing that Nevada, Missouri really is positioned in a good place being only 98 miles from KC, and 98 miles to Springfield, only 60 miles north of Joplin, and about 150 miles to Branson. These short travels to much bigger metro areas are an advantage at the fingertips of the Nevada, Missouri music scene.
Lunch With Doug was officially born on March 23, 2017 as a re-entry into the hearts of the community after internet trends changed and the music industry crashed. This time it was about more than just music but with a heart for the arts.

Follow Doug's Music at BandCamp!
Hey there,
I write to you today in hopes I can get you all onboard as followers at my Bandcamp page.
What is Bandcamp? You may be asking. It is a web-space and app dedicated to independent music. Right now Bandcamp is one of the most popular places for indie artists and bands (such as me) to be able to get their music out to the world in a logistical way for this type of artists.
I have made my Bandcamp space as unique as possibly can from all of the other social media places that I have content at, and the ones I use frequently. Also Bandcamp as a whole has set their page up to be all about audio music and a few communication tools.
Not all of my albums and singles go to the major digital outlets. This is mostly controlled by me but sometimes for reasons out of my control, there are places that my music does not get to. This is ok for the most part, but another element of distribution that can be out of my control is how fast a digital outlet will get the release available to the public. With Bandcamp I am in complete control. So for instance, If I should get an album ready to put out to the world I can have it up and online in a matter of minutes (this does not include the writing, production, etc. of course though), unlike the others in which usually 2 days at best for a few of the really big companies but still some outlets not releasing until a week to 2 weeks later.
So with all of that said, here's what I do. I get all of my music to Bandcamp first because it gets said music to the followers first. Next I decide if the particular release should be kept as a special exclusive release just for the Bandcamp subscribers or should it be made available at all of the major music outlets etc. This usually is a decision made based on a number of factors such as: Is it a live track? Has a different version been released before? Is this something that will apply to a broad worldwide audience, or is it just something more for the super-fans?
Normally all singles are released everywhere, because single songs are meant to be top products promoting the next upcoming album, or just the catalog of music as a whole. Back catalog items usually go to Bandcamp only just for the subscribers since they were already released in some fashion and unless they are like a re-issue for the 20 years or something are going to be a release that the super-fans are going to want, and possibly owned before on CD or Cassette, but over time lost or broke that original product. So the super-fans deserve to have access to those things, and they might just go idle to the mass market, without having the gusto, and momentum of promotion that a new album would have behind it.
I hope this helps you understand how the Bandcamp is working, and that you will consider following, or at least dropping by www.DangerousDougHarper.Bandcamp.com just to check it out or check out the NEW music as it develops on my Bandcamp page by following below!

Back to the Blog!
Hey all,
Doug here. Just wanting to bring some clarification to the last few TikTok videos that have rolled out from yours truly.... #LunchWithDoug. It's a TikTok social experiment. Let's see how it is going so far.
The latest was me combing my hair, since, well, I have fallen subject to the TikTok phenomenon.
Before that was my son Colton waking up and eating cereal. Again, TikTok phenomenon.
Ok, then there was the video before that.... Me going to McDonald's to apparently to get french fries based on the gif that was stamped on the video. This has been the most popular so far this week, and is in the top three on the Lunch with Doug TikTok page.
Do you like Mario? That was the topic of the next video with game music and featuring my children asking if you like Mario.
Now for the most creative of the videos that I have posted to the Lunch With Doug TikTok page. This one features me walking around, and the camera is angled to my feet. Then it shows some buttons and handles to push to exit with some abstract music titled "Walkman".
Ok finally one that kinda has a real point. This next video has some words on the screen and says "Cottey College Play coming soon!" the camera show some shots of the set on the theater stage.
Now for the video witht he words "Let's Jam" posted. It is me playing my guitar with an original little rhythm jam. #TikTokBand and #LetsJam are the hashtags. Hope someone does a reply video and jams along soon. But until then just one view. LOL.
There are more but I see now that I have wandered off from what Lunch With Doug needs to be saying. LOL
Enjoy the videos! They are fun!
